A little over 6 months ago I switched to a standing desk. It’s been a good experience so far. Every time someone new walks into my office and sees it for the first time I always get the same questions. I thought I’d take some time to share those questions and my experience with you.
Here are before and after pictures of my desk.
Why did you switch to a standing desk?
A lot of what I do requires spending large chunks of time working on a computer. At the end of most days when I’d get up to leave at the end of the day I’d feel like a slug. There were times when I wished I could stand so I started researching standing desks.
Isn’t it uncomfortable to stand all day?
I’m not going to lie. The first 2 weeks were a little rough. My legs hurt and I was really tired at the end of the day. With each day that passed it got easier. Now I don’t even notice it. I kept thinking about all the jobs and professions where people don’t have the option of sitting. I figured if they could do it so could I.
Have you lost any weight? Do you notice any benefits?
Right away I started sleeping better. It’s because my body was working harder than it previously had. I’m not really sure if I’ve lost any weight but I can tell you my legs are definitely stronger and I feel much better.
How did you do it? How much did it cost?
When I first started researching desks I found they could be a bit pricey. We’re talking a thousand dollars or more. That’s when I ran across an online article where someone had turned a few things from Ikea into a standing desk. Something simple that you sat on top of your current desk raising the height of your work space. It was just what I was looking for and we already had a vacation planned to a city with an Ikea.
I followed the guide buying the Lack Table and shelf at Ikea and the bolts and shelf brackets at Lowe’s. It cost right around $20 dollars and took less than a half hour to put together. If you can drill a hole you can do this easy project.
That’s a little bit about my standing desk. Let me know if you have any questions that I didn’t cover. If you use a standing desk I’d love to hear about your experience and see pictures of your desk. Post them over on my Facebook page.
