Memory Monday – Big Fish

One of the things I love most about putting up our Christmas tree each year is the memories it brings back.  Pretty much every decoration or ornament has a memory associated with it.

One of the ornaments that makes me smile is one that my Aunt and Uncle gave me 5 years ago.  It’s a blue, glass fish ornament to commemorate the biggest fish I ever caught.

It was a walleye that was a quarter inch shy of 24 inches.  I caught it at Lake Rathbun during our annual family reunion camping trip.My Uncle had the boat, poles, and bait and took me and a cousin out to try our luck.  The sun was setting and we were trolling near the shoreline when the fish struck.

I grabbed the pole and started reeling it in while trying to listen to all the coaching from my Uncle.  “Relax… keep the tip… reel it in a little.” Not exactly the easiest thing for a novice fisherman like me to do in the heat of the moment.

To be honest, I don’t know how long it took to get that walleye in the boat… but I’m betting it was several minutes.  I do know this. I was winded when it was all over.

My family got two good meals out of that fish! And it was delicious!

What’s the biggest fish you’ve caught?
