Memory Monday – Exploding Campfire

Memorial Day has come and gone and that means it’s officially camping season!  I’ve seen many friends on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter that have already gone camping.

Not gonna lie… their pictures and stories make me a little jealous and have me excited for our Annual Family Reunion Camping Trip!

I’ve already seen a lot of pictures (and a few videos) of campfires. That reminded me of my most memorable campfire.  It happened on a Boy Scout camping weekend when I was probably in 6th or 7th grade.

We arrived at our camping destination, got our tents put up, and started the camp fire.

There wasn’t a set itinerary and our leaders were busy setting up their tents because they had helped us boys set up ours.

Well, you can only imagine what happens when you get a handful of preteen boys together that are just out of ear and eyeshot of adult supervision.  I’m not sure who suggested it or how it happened but we thought it’d be fun to see what happen when you throw a full can of OFF Insect Repellant in the campfire.

The can got thrown in the fire and we retreated into the woods to hide behind trees to watch and wait.  It didn’t take long before there was a loud KABOOM!

The can exploded with a loud bang!  When it did it blew a log that took 2 of us to put into the fire a few feet out of the fire ring.  It also brought our leaders running.

We got an earful and an immediate lesson on fire safety.  On the plus side, we weren’t bothered by bugs the whole weekend!

Looking back on the incident now it makes me smile… and shake my head wondering how in the world none of us got hurt.  Someone was looking out for us that day.

Please do NOT try this the next time you go camping.  We were lucky.  You might not be.
