Weekly Verse – Understanding

I’ve been paying attention to the news this week out of Baltimore. Any time you hear the word “riot” in the news you pay attention but after that first night I’ve been following it a little more closely.

It turns out a friend from my graduating high school class lives in the Baltimore area.  He shared on Facebook about the craziness and how his daughter’s field trip got cancelled because of the rioting.

Having someone I know personally affected and sharing his thoughts really made the situation real.  From my distant vantage point it became more than just a news story.

I haven’t fully figured out how I feel about the situation.  Mainly because I don’t fully understand it.  To be honest, I don’t think I can ever truly understand it.

Being a white, middle class, male certainly clouds my perspective.

That said, I want to understand.  I want clarity.

I’ve seen so many people expressing their opinions… but not many asking questions, seeking knowledge, or trying to understand.
