Matthew 16:26 (NIV)
“What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?”
This is one of my all time favorite verses. It’s one I go back to a lot. Especially when I start to feel sorry for myself about what I don’t have or envious of what others have.
To me it translates this way… if you get everything you could ever want but lose sight of God… then you really don’t have anything at all. Material things aren’t what matters. It’s our relationship with God and living our lives the way he wants us too.
Matthew 16:26 is the basis for one of my favorite songs: TobyMac’s Lose My Soul.
What I like most about this song is it starts and ends with prayers that I can really relate to.
Father God, I am clay in your hands,
Help me to stay that way through all life’s demands,
‘Cause they chip and they nag and they pull at me,
And every little thing I make up my mind to be,
Like I’m gonna be a daddy whose in the mix,
And I’m gonna be a husband who stays legit,
And I pray that I’m an artist who rises above,
The road that is wide and filled with self love,
Everything that I see draws me,
Though it’s only in You that I can truly see that its a feast for the eyes- a low blow to purpose.
And I’m a little kid at a three ring circus.
I don’t want to gain the whole world, and lose my soul.
Then it wraps up like this:
Lord forgive us when we get consumed by the things of this world,
That fight for our love, and our passion,
As our eyes are open wide and on you.
Grant us the privilege of your world view,
And may your kingdom be, what wakes us up, and lays us down.
As long as I have the love of my God and my family I have everything I need.
