Spring planting in our area is underway. Farmers are out in full force getting their crops in the ground. This morning on the way to work I lost count of the number of tractors I saw. As I pulled into our driveway tonight the field across from our house was being planted.
Since there’s so much farming activity going on right now I thought I’d offer up a Bible verse for the farmers: James 5:7 (NRSV).
Be patient, therefore, beloved, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious crop from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains.
Whether they want to be or not farmers have to be patient. They need to wait for the right weather conditions to plant and harvest. They need to wait on the rain.
Farmers also need to have a lot of faith. If they didn’t they could never do what they do. Planting seed in the ground in the Spring and trusting there will be something to harvest in the Fall takes a tremendous amount of faith.
My grandparents, uncles, father-in-law, cousins and friends who either are or were farmers are some of the most patient and strongest people of faith I know. To them I offer up a prayer for a safe planting season. And once the seed is all in the ground “may the rains fall soft upon your fields”.
