What Do You Worry About Most

On the way home from work most nights I listen to podcasts. Tonight’s selection was from New York Times Best Selling Author Andy Andrews and his podcast In The Loop.  Recently during his podcasts Andy has been answering questions his fans have emailed in.

The particular question for this episode was, “What’s the hardest thing in your life and what do you worry about most?”  I’ll admit that after I heard the question I didn’t “hear” much of the rest of the podcast.  I was too busy trying to figure out how I would answer.

I skipped the “what’s the hardest thing in your life” and focused on “what do you worry about most”.  I probably did that because I can tend to be a worrier.  So for the better part of thirty minutes I thought long and hard about my worries and fears.

While that might sound depressing it was actually quite freeing.  I realized that when I faced my worries and fears on my terms they didn’t seem so big.  It’s when they sneak up on you that they can seem insurmountable.

I don’t think focusing on your worries all the time is healthy but setting some time aside every once in awhile to think about them could be a good thing.  Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Now I need to go back and hear how Andy Andrews answered the question.

My Biggest Office Pet Peeve

If you work in an office chances are you have a number of pet peeves; things your co-workers do that annoy you.  I could probably come up with a long list but for today I’ll narrow it down to the one that annoys me the most.

I’m fortunate enough to have my own office.  That means I have a door I can close when I need to cut down on distractions and focus on my work.  My biggest office pet peeve is when someone opens the door and walks right in without knocking.  Or they knock but proceed to enter before I can respond.

It’s not that I’m ever doing anything behind a closed door that I wouldn’t want anyone to see.  To me, knocking is a sign of respect.  I’d never dream of just walking right into my General Manager’s office without knocking and waiting for him to acknowledge.

Sometimes I’ll just let it go.  Other times I’ll say something like, “Geez… it’s a good thing I had my pants on.  You might want to knock next time!”   Some laugh and take the hint.  Others are simply clueless.

What’s your biggest office pet peeve… and do you say anything or just continue to let it annoy you?

Did You Really Mean That?

When you speak with someone face-to-face you get the full message. You hear the words.  You see their body language and facial expressions.  You can hear the tone in their voice.  That’s not the case with written communication.  All you get then is words on a page or screen.

That’s why written communication can sometimes come across wrong… or not as you had intended.  I was reminded of this yesterday.

Friday afternoons are the busiest, most stressful time of my week.  I was missing a file so I emailed the person who I knew had it.  The response I got back kind of ticked me off at first.

All it said was, “It’s in the email I sent yesterday”.

The way my mind at the time read it was, “Duh, you idiot!  It’s in the email I sent yesterday.  Quit bothering me and check before you email me next time!

I have no way of knowing if that’s really how they meant it but in mind they could of prevented me thinking they were rude by responding with something like, “You must not have noticed but it’s in the email I sent yesterday.  Let me know if you can’t find it and I’ll be happy to send it again.  Have a great weekend.

While not necessary, the second response definitely would have come across as more polite.

Looking back on it now the email came across short and rude to me because I was really stressed out and running behind. The fact I was silently calling myself an idiot for not realizing I already had the file didn’t help either.

This example, while trivial, has reminded me of the importance of reading back texts or emails before I send them to make sure the message I really want to get across is clear.

It’s also a reminder for me to re-read messages I get and give the sender the benefit of the doubt… and not assume they meant to be rude.

As society shifts away from verbal communication to more text based communication it’s important to realize that misinterpretations can happen.  No facial expressions, body language, or tone of voice leaves you with just words.
