Weekly Verse – Encouraging Words

This week as I was rappelling for the first time ever down the side of a 345 foot building I realized the power of encouragement.

Rappelling Pic

I was halfway down and running out of gas both physically and mentally.  That’s when an experienced rappeller came down on the rope next to me.

Having her call out my name and tell me how great I was doing really helped me out mentally.  As I got closer to the ground hearing my youngest daughter yell up at me was encouraging as well.

So, I set out to find some encouraging words in the Bible and came across Psalm 91:14-16 (MSG).

If you’ll hold on to me for dear life,” says God,
    “I’ll get you out of any trouble.
I’ll give you the best of care
    if you’ll only get to know and trust me.
Call me and I’ll answer, be at your side in bad times;
    I’ll rescue you, then throw you a party.
I’ll give you a long life,
    give you a long drink of salvation!”

What Bible verse do you turn to for encouragement?

Weekly Verse – Good & Bad Days

One of the things I love most about the Bible is how I can start out looking for scriptures relating to one topic but by the time I’m done I’ve ended up in a slightly different direction.

When that happens I usually stumble upon a scripture that really speaks to me at that moment.  That’s what happened tonight!

This week I’m really feeling grateful for family and friends so I set out to find a verse to share about being grateful or thankful.

The ones I found were all good but they just didn’t grab me.  That’s when I came across Ecclesiastes 7:14 (MSG).  It did.

“On a good day, enjoy yourself;
On a bad day, examine your conscience.
God arranges for both kinds of days
So that we won’t take anything for granted.”

I like the simplicity of this verse and how relatable it is.  We all have both good and bad days.

I also like that it’s a reminder that God is ultimately in control.  Not me.  Something that’s always good to remember.

Ever start out looking for something in the Bible and end up in a different direction?

Going “Over The Edge” For Special Olympics Iowa

A few weeks ago I wrote about trying to decide whether I should participate in a fundraiser for Special Olympics Iowa… one that would have me rappelling 345 feet down the side of a building in downtown Des Moines.

I thought about it and decided to go for it!  Part my decision to say “yes” was learning more about Special Olympics and their mission:

“To provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.”

I really like their oath too!

“Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”

What a great motto for the Special Olympics and for life!

As the day of the rappel approaches I’m getting more excited… and nervous.

I plan on writing about the experience here and documenting it in video form on YouTube.  That’s right!  A friend from church offered to let me borrow his Go Pro camera so I should be able to get some good footage of the event.

If you have any charity dollars left in your budget please consider donating to Special Olympics Iowa.  You can donate safely and securely online here.
