If I’m going to sit down and read the Bible I prefer to have it in actual book form. The version I enjoy most is The Message. It’s the easiest for me to understand.
Whenever I want to look up a verse or find verses on a specific topic I turn to the internet. More times than not the website I go to is www.biblegateway.com.
The other day I discovered a really cool and useful tool on the site. You can enter the verse you want and then have up to 5 different versions shown side by side on the screen.
It’s really interesting to see the differences in versions. Some are subtle. Others, not so much.
I like to show The Message, King James Version, New International Version, New Revised Standard Version, and Revised Standard Version.
Try it out for yourself. Go go www.biblegateway.com and enter your favorite verse. Then on the right hand of the screen click on the icon circled in the screenshot below and select a different version of the Bible.
You can click on that icon a couple more times and show up to 5 different versions. It’s pretty cool and useful. There’s even an icon (circled below) to have the verse read for you.
What are some online Bible resources you use?
I made it a goal to share a different Bible verse each week this year. Back in January I asked on my Facebook page for suggestions of favorite Bible verses of readers of this blog.
Since I wasn’t feeling lead in any particular direction this week I went back and revisited that post… and all the verse suggestions left in the comments. Every single one was good but one in particular grabbed me tonight.
It’s 1 Corinthians 16:13-14. Here’s how it reads in the Message:
“Keep your eyes open, hold tight to your convictions, give it all you got, be resolute, and love without stopping.”
That’s great advice and it applies whether everything is going right in your life or you’re in a period of struggles.
It’s a verse that I’ll be trying to commit to memory!
What are some of your favorite verses? Let me know and I might just use it some week!
The Bible verse I chose to share this week sort of chose itself. I saw it earlier in the week as a Facebook status of a friend. Then when I sat down to find a verse to share here it was one of the first I came across.
For whatever reason, verses 16 through 19 in the 6th chapter of Proverbs found their way to me to share with you.
“Here are six things God hates,
and one more that he loathes with a passion:
eyes that are arrogant,
a tongue that lies,
hands that murder the innocent,
a heart that hatches evil plots,
feet that race down a wicked track,
a mouth that lies under oath,
a troublemaker in the family.”
There are a few things that jump out at me about these verses.
First, like most of Proverbs, they’re really easy to understand. Not much gray area in them.
Second, the word “lie” came up twice. Must really be important! With my own kids, if I want to impress something upon them I’ll say it more than once and in more than one way.
What are your thoughts on these verses?
